His Grace Lambert Bainomugisha

He is the second born in the family of 8 children of which 4 are living. 

He attended primary education from Buhungiro Church School from 1970-71, Kyabahesi church school 1972-74 and Kiyenje Primary School 1975-1977. In 1978 he joined St. Francis Xavier, Kitabi Minor Seminary in Bushenyi district. He did his phyilosophical studies at St. Thomas Aquinas, Katigondo Major Seminary in Masaka 1984-87. He complited theological studies from St. Mary’s Ggaba National Seminary in Kampala 1988-1991.

He was ordained a priest of Mbarara Diocese at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, Nyamitanga by Bishop Paul K. Bakyenga on 13th July 1991. He served as curate at St. Joseph the Worker, Rubindi Parish from 1991 until 1994. He was sent for further studies to St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada, where he graduated with a Doctorate degree in Canon Law 1994-2000.

On his return to Uganda, he served a the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Mbarara 2000-2005 and as Chaplain at Corpus Christi Chaplaincy of Mbarara University of Science and Technology-MUST 200-2003. In addition to his duties as Chancellor, he was also Chaplain of the Generalate of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel of Mbarara and the Poor Clares Monastery in Nyamitanga.

On 2nd July 2005, he was nominated by Pope Benedict XVI as the Auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara with the titular See of Tacia Montana. He received the Episcopal Ordination on 1 October 2005. On 13th November 2009 he was nominated as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Hoima.  He carried out this responsibility till 29th February 2016. He thereafter, returned to the Archdiocese of Mbarara as its Auxiliary Bishop until his election by Pope Francis on 25th Aprill 2020 as the New Archbishop and Metropolitan of Mbarara.
